The Crystal is a place where anyone can go to explore the ideal future of our cities. It is one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, a knowledge centre and home to the largest exhibition dedicated to urban sustainability.
I really enjoyed the exhibition and I think it is a good way of showing that a sustainable future it is possible in which technology will play a very important role. For a city to be successful, sustainable and truly prosper, it needs to balance three things: Environment, Economy and Quality of Life. These are the three pillars of this event and this is where your journey begins:
There are two floors full of technology and innovative ideas that are ready to be applied in everyday life!.
During the exhibition it was evident that changing behaviours from transport represents a big challenge for our societies and specially for our policy-makers in order to provide suitable transportation according to the city features. The mix of transport on offer in any city is dependant on factors such as location, the needs of the people who live there, and the buildings and infrastructure already in place.
At the exhibition you will have the opportunity to design your own sustainable city with its own transportation services. An interactive software will give you information of the best choices; for example, if your city has 2 million inhabitants and the population is spread far and wide, the best options for people to commute are light rails and commuter train due to the population is spread over a very wide area, so a lot of people commute downtown.
On the other hand, electricity is going to be in every aspect and activity of our lives, including transport. From trains to Smart Choppers, such as the Siemens Smart Chopper, the first ever custom electric American Chopper that is made from both new and recycle materials, with a range of 60 miles on a single charge and an on-board charger that can be plugged into any 110-volt outlet; recharge time of 5 hours (1-2 hours with a charge station).
Finally, on the second floor you will find the forces of Change theatre to watch three short videos on the challenges that face cities today: Demographic Change, Urbanisation and Climate Change. I really enjoy it!
